Today the Anne Clark Centre hosted Day One of the 2013 Oceania Netball Cup, where 26 teams gathered to contest the first leg of the round robin tournament.
The music was pumping, the Leis were blowing in the breeze, and some fantastic netball was played both indoors and outdoors in stunning spring sunshine. Mums, Dads, Aunties, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters, Cousins – everyone was out enjoying a day of netball!
NSW Swifts co-captain Mo’onia Gerrard was out roaming the courts offering support, signing a few autographs and taking some photographs. She even brought her whistle to officiate a game between the Poly Monstars and OREO’s, while also taking the court to fill in for a team who had a player down!
Playing in the 13U division, Druitt, were one of two lucky teams who won the Early Entry Draw to have Mo’onia with them for one of their games, and they relished the chance to get some tips from one of the best in the game.
From giving them a pre-game pep talk, to offering advice at halftime and delivering their water bottles, the players were thrilled to learn from Mo’onia.
Netball NSW Community Engagement Manager Kristy Guthrie was delighted with the atmosphere that surrounded Day One of the tournament.
“Today has just been fantastic; it’s so awesome to see everyone get into the spirit of the Oceania Netball Cup and, most importantly, have fun!” Guthrie said.
“We’ve seen teams decorate their tents in full Island-style, players swap teams to help others that are down a position, people getting involved in passing and shooting competitions … it’s been a really great first day and I can’t wait for Day Two tomorrow.”
The Oceania Netball Cup began last year as a result of a vision by Mo’onia Gerrard which was brought to life by Netball NSW.
