It is with great sadness that Netball NSW informs our community of the passing of netball stalwart Deirdre Hyland AM.
Hyland played a significant role in her contribution to our sport for over 30 years at all levels – Association, State, National and International.
She was the former President of the International Federation of Netball Associations (now INF) from 1987-1991, whilst also acting as President of Netball Australia (1978-1991). Hyland also provided strong service to Netball QLD as President for six years (1974-1980).
Along with her administration roles, Hyland acted as he Australian Team Manager for three overseas tours (1978, 1981, 1982), and was an official delegate at the sixth and seventh Netball World Tournaments; she also served on the Australian Institute of Sport (1981-1983) and Confederation of Australian Sport (1987-1988) Boards.
Hyland was also integral to the success of the 1991 World Netball Championships in Sydney by chairing the organising committee.
During her long and fulfilling netball journey Hyland also launched her own book alongside the likes of Dorothy McHugh OAM called ‘Netball – State of Play.’
Receiving the Order of Australia Medal in 1990, Hyland was also inducted into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame in 2010 for her long lasting service to netball.
Our thoughts remain with the Hyland family, their friends and associates at this time.
