Wendy Archer AM, has been awarded Netball NSW Life Membership for her commitment, passion and dedication to netball in NSW, which spans three decades of service of the sport.
Wendy’s passion for the sport, its participants and broader netball family knows no bounds and this was reflected in her emotion-filled acceptance earlier today.
Presented by fellow Life Members Anne Sargeant OAM (2010) and Marilyn Melhuish OAM (2004) the award came as a huge shock to the current Netball NSW President and was met with vigorous applause by the Netball NSW Council delegates.
“It is a privilege – in fact, it has been a huge privilege for me to lead the organisation during this period and to represent Netball NSW outside of this state” said a surprised Archer AM on receiving the accolade.
Wendy has offered strong leadership to Netball NSW for the last 13 years in her position of President. Under her guidance, Netball NSW has grown across all areas of the business and sport itself from the grassroots to the elite competition, including in participation numbers, volunteers, membership, corporate partners, and as a professional sporting organisation.
In addition to her role as President, Wendy has served Netball NSW in numerous other capacities, including as Vice-President, Member – Netball NSW Umpires’ Committee, Netball NSW Board Performance and Remuneration Committee and Netball NSW Board of Strategic Development Committee, to name but a few.
At an Association District and Club Level, Wendy served as President of the Port Stephens Netball Association – of which she is still patron and Life Member and is passionate about the develop of the sport at the grass roots, having been an A Badged umpire and umpire coach for many years.
In addition to her praise for colleagues, peers and netball family, Wendy Archer AM was thrilled to have the opportunity to thank her family who Netball NSW had arranged to sneak into Netball Central for the surprise presentation.
“I have a few words for my family, who have supported me…and in particular my husband who is particularly tolerant of my time away from home. Thank you. Thank you to my daughters and grand daughter Hannah (who is here) and who will be playing netball at Maitland this year…there are all really supportive… in fact, if I am home on a Tuesday night they want to know why…why are you here, don’t you have somewhere to be?” said Archer AM with her wonderfully dry sense of humour.
With over 35 years’ dedication to netball at all levels, Wendy joins an elite group. First awarded in 1950 to Mary Matheson, only 24 Netball NSW Life Memberships having been awarded across the following 66 years with the previous Life Membership was awarded in 2012 to Yvonne Richardson.
Netball NSW is proud to announce the presentation of the 26th Netball NSW Life Membership to Wendy Archer AM, and we congratulate her on joining this distinguished and accomplished group of Netball women.
In her closing remarks Wendy concluded; “For me being involved in netball is very simple. I simply love the sport and I just want to be a part of making the sport the best that it can. And thank you very much for this honour.”
