This week, nswswifts.com.au celebrates another personal milestone achieved during the 2013 ANZ Championship season. This time it’s Assistant Coach Robert Wright, who on Sunday will take to the sidelines for his 50th ANZ Championship game.
Alongside Rob in celebrating the 50 ANZ Championship game for the NSW Swifts is English international and Swifts defender Sonia Mkoloma, who has played every game since joining the Club during the same season as Assistant Coach Wright.
Rob joined the NSW Swifts in 2010, coaching alongside Julie Fitzgerald before partnering with Lisa Beehag last year. NSWSwiftsTV caught up with the Swifts ‘Stats Man’ to reflect upon his coaching career thus far, whilst also previewing the Swifts upcoming Round 9 match against the Adelaide Thunderbirds this weekend.
When asked what it meant to be celebrating 50 matches with the NSW Swifts, Rob said it came as a bit of a shock as he doesn’t monitor his own statistics!
“It was actually a bit of a surprise. We were going through last week how many games I’d been involved in and just so happened it was 49 games … it’s really exciting; it’s been a real pleasure to be involved in the last four seasons,” Rob said.
“Both [Julie Fitzgerald and Lisa Beehag] have been fantastic to work for and work with. I like to pick up stuff from everyone I work with and there are great things from both [coaches] I have picked up along the way. I’m really thankful for that opportunity.”
After four seasons with the Swifts, Rob has seen plenty of action on and off the court. But his first game on the Swifts bench is still strong in his mind.
“[One of my favourite memories was] when I was lucky enough to be appointed to this position … my very first [ANZ Championship] game with the team at the start of the 2010 season … being involved with the team for the very first time is such a special memory,” Rob claimed.
Now heading into his 50th game, Rob and the Club turn their attention to the in-form Adelaide Thunderbirds at Netball SA Stadium. Renowned for his statistics about the other ANZ Championship teams and their athletes, Rob says the Swifts have a big challenge ahead this weekend.
“Clearly we know they have a really good defence end … and their shooting line-up is just superb. Erin Bell, I think, is playing the best netball of her career and Carla Borrego is just a threat week-in and week-out. They have strength across the court and also very well coached,” said Rob.
“It’s a fantastic challenge [for the Swifts] to play and I look forward to that [this weekend].”
