Over the weekend, Netball NSW held a Marie Little Shield Catch Up and Come & Try Day at Netball Central.
The Marie Little Shield is Australia’s national tournament for females aged over 16 years with an intellectual disability. Named after disability netball pioneer, Marie Little OAM, the competition sees teams from each state compete.
As the Marie Little Shield Tournament was cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was a great opportunity for the 2019 playing group, training partners and support staff to come together, as well as providing an opportunity for new players to come along and be involved in the day which included some training and game play.
The day started off with plenty of catching up and reconnecting with old teammates and lots of introductions for the new players and their families and carers that joined us. The coaching staff kicked things off with a thorough warm up and moved straight into some drills focusing on footwork, movement and passing technique.
After morning tea, it was then time to put all the skills into practice as they got into some game play. There was some exceptional passing down the court to the shooters who were on fire and hardly missed all day. There were also some amazing intercepts by the midcourt players and defenders that received a round of applause from the parents and carers in the stands. It was also fantastic to see some of the more experienced players mentoring their teammates during the games.
There were lots of smiles and lots of laughter throughout the day and it was a fantastic display of teamwork skill and most of all fun!
