Opens
Manly Warringah Sapphires v ERNA Hawks (47 - 46)
We couldn’t have asked for a better match for the Grand Finals. The game was neck-and-neck throughout, there was no telling who was going to win, up until the buzzer went off calling full-time! Hawks came out strong, taking the lead in the first quarter 13-10, but this only motivated Sapphires further to reel it back in, and ended up in the lead by just 1 goal at half-time. With a score of 24-23 in favour of Sapphires, the pressure was on for both teams to crank it up and get themselves a definitive lead. The quarter remained relatively goal for goal, until Sapphires made a turnover that allowed them to take their lead to 3 goals. Entering the final quarter down 33-36, this was the ERNA Hawks final chance at redemption and being crowned the Opens Premier League Champions, for a competition they had been leading all season. They turned it around and managed to get the game to an even score. With seconds to go, Sapphires were in the lead by 1 goal and held their possession for the final seconds of the match and ultimately winning the game. A massive congratulations goes to Manly Warringah Sapphires on being the 2023 Premier League Opens Champions, and another huge congratulations to ERNA Hawks on their fantastic season, being able to maintain their 1st place position all season and being Runners Up of the Season altogether!
U23s
UTS Randwick Sparks v GWS Fury (44 - 51)
Fury came into the game all guns blazing, and had only one thing on their mind, the Championship Title. After dominating the internal season, sitting at the top of the ladder and only losing 2 games throughout, Fury was hungry for the win. They started off doubling UTS Randwick Sparks’ score 16-8 which was a tough lead for Sparks to shake off. Sparks played a fantastic game and managed to win both the second and third quarter of the Grand Final match and minimised that lead to 4 goals. Sparks were certainly still in the running for the Championship Title, only behind 32-36 as they entered the final quarter. Pressure was high, but Fury was able to get the ball rolling and just kept bringing the ball into the goal circle. Fury won the quarter by 3 goals, totaling their lead to 7 goals and labelling themselves the 2023 Premier League U23s Champions. Congratulations to both teams for their incredible efforts and achievements this season! We can’t wait to see all teams come back next year for the 2024 Season!
