As Lunar New Year has arrived, Hills District Netball Association player Lai Leung is a shining example of how netball can create confidence, connection and opportunity for young athletes from all backgrounds.
Lai first found the sport at seven years old. An energetic and competitive child, she came home from school one day with a simple request for her mum, Noelle. The boys no longer wanted to play with her, and the girls she played with couldn’t quite keep up. She wanted something challenging - something she could throw herself into. Netball quickly became that outlet.
From the moment she stepped onto court, Lai loved the game. While those early days came with some nerves, particularly being one of the only players of Asian background in her team - her passion for the sport soon outweighed any uncertainty. With encouragement from her mum, who reminded her that Australia is proudly multicultural and that on the court “you’re all just little girls,” Lai focused on improving her skills and enjoying herself.
Now 12 years old, Lai has flourished. Following a recent family move, she joined Hills District Netball Association where she was welcomed warmly into a brand-new team despite not knowing any of the players beforehand. Her confidence continues to grow, and her hard work has opened new doors.
In her third year of indoor netball, Lai successfully trialled for the NSW Indoor State Team and will travel to Ipswich with her family to compete — a milestone moment that reflects her dedication and resilience.

For the Leung family, Lunar New Year is a time to celebrate culture, family and fresh beginnings, marked by red packets and shared meals. This year, it also represents how far Lai has come in a sport that has embraced her.
“Netball has changed my child in a good way,” Noelle says. “She’s more motivated — not just in sport, but in her studies too.”
Lai’s journey is a reminder that netball is more than a game. It’s a place where young girls can find belonging, build confidence and chase opportunity — no matter their background.
