In 2024 the Netball NSW Regional State Cup evolved to provide similar performance opportunities to regional athletes, coaches and officials as the Netball NSW Premier League U23 competition currently provides metropolitan participants.
As well as that, another number of key goals were identified:
- Deliver a representative competition for regional athletes aged 16-22 to fill an identified gap in performance competition.
- Deliver an annual competition that brings the best athletes from regional areas together to contest the Regional State Cup and crown a champion.
- Increase opportunities for regional athletes to be talent identified for future performance programs.
- Deliver a competition format and training environment format that is accessible for regional athletes, coaches, umpires and officials without relocation or prohibitive travel costs.
- Build a sense of pride and collaboration in each region and provide a sense of purpose for regions to establish athlete, coaches, umpires and officials’ development programs.
- Increase the numbers of regional athletes, coaches, umpires and officials that stay in netball, and subsequently progress and transition within the Netball NSW pathway.
- Increase the numbers of NSW athletes capable of ultimately achieving high performance success.
As a result, the following seven regional sides were invited to take part in the competition at Netball Central in Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 October.
- Far North Coast
- Hunter and Central Coast
- North Coast
- North West (formally known as Northern Inland)
- Riverina
- South Coast
- West Central West
All teams played each other twice over the two-day competition with the winners and runners up determined by a first past the post system.
It was a hotly contested competition but by the end of play there were two standout sides who finished well clear of the rest.
Hunter Central Coast were crowed Regional State Cup champions after winning 11 of their 12 games, while Riverina were hot on their heels with 10 wins, one draw and one loss.
Finishing out the top three were North Coast who secured seven wins.
