This year’s Internation Women's Day theme, “Give to Gain,” reflects the spirit of netball, a sport built on the passion, dedication and leadership of women who give their time and energy so others can grow, connect and thrive.
Across Netball in NSW, women are at the heart of the game with women making 92 per cent of non-playing roles, including coaches, volunteers and administrators. Ninety-five per cent of registered players are also women who consistently shape the sport and empower the next generation on and off the court.
Executive General Manager of Communities Trish Crews said International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise the growth of women’s sport and the role netball continues to play in developing confident leaders.
“Seeing the growth of International Women’s Day and the fact that people now celebrate it across the community is fantastic,” Crews said.
“It also gives us the opportunity to spotlight what netball can do for women and girls, the leadership it builds and the way people grow personally through the game.”
Crews said the “Give to Gain” theme also reflects the important role volunteers play across the netball community.
“Our sport is run by volunteers who give their time coaching, umpiring and supporting clubs every week,” she said.
“What they give means so many other girls and women are gaining opportunities through netball.”
The theme also aligns with the work of the Netball NSW Foundation, which supports women and girls through its three pillars: a place to belong, thrive and unite. Through community programs and fundraising initiatives, the Foundation aims to help more people access netball while also supporting personal development on and off the court.
Netball has long been recognised as a sport that develops strong female leaders, with players, coaches and volunteers gaining confidence, communication skills and the ability to support and inspire those around them.
Chairperson of the Netball NSW Youth Advisory Group, Sofia Novak said International Women’s Day is an important moment to celebrate the women who continue to inspire the next generation.
“As someone who has grown up with strong women who have inspired me and made me who I am today, International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to our society,” Novak said.
She said netball provides a unique environment where women and girls can build confidence and connection.
“As a team sport, netball is built on connection and fostering belonging,” Novak said.
“It’s a space where you can develop not just as a player, umpire or coach, but as a person.”
As the netball community celebrates International Women’s Day, the message behind “Give to Gain” remains clear, when people give their time, leadership and support to the sport, women and girls across New South Wales gain confidence, connection and opportunity.
