Shelley Hutchinson is a member of Dubbo Netball Association with over 20 years of umpiring experience.
Netball NSW would like to congratulate Shelley following her elevation from the HART Regional League to represent West Central West at the 2021 Regional State Cup.
We chatted with Shelley to discuss her journey in officialdom…
Why do you love umpiring?
I love the game of netball. I love playing, but I enjoy umpiring a lot more. Being a part of the umpiring team is a great privilege. Through my time I have learnt that umpiring is a journey which does not end. You learn and adapt with the game.
Who has inspired you in your umpiring career and why?
There are many of people that have inspired me in my umpiring career, but two people stand out. Firstly, Michelle Ensor who has been a part of Dubbo Netball Association for many years as Umpire Convenor and has facilitated the Regional League. Michelle is a great advocate for umpires and will support any player, coach, umpire, spectator the same. Everyone is on the same playing field, no matter who you are. She is a great asset to Dubbo Netball, which I am thankful for.
Another person who has inspired me is Bronwen Adams. Bron is approachable, likeable, knowledgeable, and what an achievement to be umpiring where she is. When umpiring at Academy Challenge a couple of years ago, I was lucky enough to receive mentoring advice from Chris Hall, Bron Adams and Emma Corfield which was incredible as a regional umpire that has fewer mentoring opportunities. Following this, Bron approached me and provided further feedback at State Championships. Her support and constructive feedback has really helped me to improve.
What is the best tip you have received about umpiring?
It might sound silly, but ‘look off’. What else is happening? Check the whole court. But who can forget the advice that the umpire is always right!
What is the best tip you have for up-and-coming umpires?
The best tip I suggest is to take up umpiring in the first place. If you just want to be a player, knowing the rules can make you a better player. Umpiring is great for building social networks and lifelong friends.
What is your favourite warm up song?
I don’t have a particular favourite warm up song, but anything that is upbeat gets me ready for the game (e.g. Eye of the Tiger, All Fired Up).
What is a challenge/setback you have had to overcome in your umpiring journey?
Dubbo is a solid five hours from Sydney, so the opportunities that metro umpires receive compared to what the Central West umpires receive is very different. I love umpiring, I enjoy it, it is my passion.
