The Regional State Cup provides regional athletes, coaches, umpires and officials the opportunity to access performance environments to achieve success and build a sense of pride and collaboration within each region.
We chatted with Laura to find out about her journey…
Why do you love Umpiring?
I was never going to be a top athlete playing but still wanted to be involved and challenged. I like that I can still be a part of the game, watch good netball, appreciate skill and keep everything safe and running smoothly.
Who has inspired you in your umpiring career and why?
I don’t really have a particular person. I’m just highly competitive and if someone is out there better than me then I want to work hard so that I can be just as good. I also just really enjoy the game. I quite like watching Tara (Warner) umpire and there was a lovely girl with a bouncy ponytail and ribbon who used to umpire on tv who I loved to watch.
What is the best tip you have received about umpiring?
The game isn’t about you. The best umpires aren’t even noticed.
What is the best tip you have for up-and-coming umpires?
Players, coaches and sidelines don’t hate you. They are emotionally involved in the game. They are passionate. Let their comments roll over your head usually you are just an outlet for them.
What is your favourite warm up song?
Don’t listen to music before a game as an umpire it gets into my head and then I have it battering around in there all day. Very annoying.
What is a challenge/setback you have had to overcome in your umpiring journey?
Distance and belief. The distance part I am attempting to overcome by driving to Newcastle every fortnight to get better games. The belief is difficult when you are essentially out on your own and only have you and your inside voice getting you through your games.
