Stacey Mawby is a member of Nambucca Valley Netball Association with 20 years of umpiring experience.
Netball NSW would like to congratulate Stacey following her selection from the HART Regional League to represent the North Coast region at the 2021 Regional State Cup.
We chatted with Stacey to discuss her journey…
Why do you love umpiring?
I love umpiring for the fact that no game is ever the same. There is always going to be a moment in every game that you can learn from, no matter if it is an under 10’s or Division 1 match.
Who has inspired you in your umpiring career and why?
So many people have inspired me during my foundation years of umpiring. From watching the B’s when I was just starting out, how they would just float down the court and have complete control of everything. To now with the amazing people around me who are helping to encourage the new umpires in our region and give them the best start that they can have in their journey.
What is the best tip you have received about umpiring?
Don’t let one decision ruin your game. Stay out of your head and call what you see, we are only human.
What is the best tip you have for up-and-coming umpires?
Always back yourself. And ask your mentors as many questions you can. They are only happy to answer them.
What is your favourite warm up song?
Anything with a good beat
What is a challenge/setback you have had to overcome in your umpiring journey?
I stopped umpiring for a few years before and after having kids. Then we moved from Brisbane to Regional NSW and I started playing and umpiring again.
There are many challenges that regional umpires face compared to metro umpires. A few of these are changing quite rapidly which is fantastic for the up-and-coming umpires. But we will always have the challenge of games without hours of travel.
