Steven Lawrence is a true grassroots netty legend — a volunteer who stepped into the sport with no prior experience, simply because he saw how much his daughters loved netball and wanted to ensure they had every opportunity to play, grow and thrive.
When his daughters’ team needed a coach, Steve didn’t hesitate to step forward. What started as helping one team quickly grew into an extraordinary commitment to the wider Singleton netball community. Through determination, self-learning and countless hours of volunteering, he developed his understanding of coaching, team development and club culture from the ground up.
Over time, Steve became a respected mentor across the association, affectionately known as “Coach Steve.”
His influence soon extended well beyond the court. Through the creation of ‘Allsorts Netball’ Steve helped build not only successful teams, but a strong identity rooted in pride, belonging and family involvement.
Steve introduced team branding, designed logos, developed custom merchandise, and encouraged other teams within the association to explore sponsorships and take greater pride in representing their clubs.
Steve’s impact has never been limited to his own teams. He has consistently supported other coaches and volunteers with mentoring, logo design, merchandise creation and practical assistance wherever needed. His willingness to help without hesitation has strengthened the entire Singleton netball community.
Such is the respect he has earned that Steve was later asked to establish and coach another team, despite not having children currently involved — a clear reflection of the trust, leadership and positivity he brings to the sport. He now manages and coaches two competitive winter teams while continuing to mentor players, coaches and families across the association.
Beyond coaching, Steve’s volunteer contribution spans every corner of community netball. From BBQs and merchandise coordination to event support and day-to-day operations, he continually gives his time without seeking recognition. His commitment saw him appointed as a Development Coach within the association, and he now also serves as Coaching Convenor.
Passionate about inclusion and culture, Steve has also created the Koori team ‘Kuulang’ - providing opportunities for players to connect with culture, community and belonging through netball. His leadership has helped ensure players feel seen, supported and proud both on and off the court.
In addition, Steve has invested heavily in his own learning and development, completing multiple coaching and education pathways, with his dedication recognised through Netball NSW First Nations coaching development opportunities.
What makes Steve’s story so powerful is that none of it came from a lifelong background in the sport. Everything he has built has come from passion, humility, hard work and a genuine commitment to helping others grow. In doing so, he has not only transformed teams — he has helped shape the culture of an entire netball community.
Steven Lawrence is more than a coach or volunteer. He is a leader, mentor, innovator and community builder whose impact will be felt for years to come.
