Baulkham Hills Netball Association’s Spring Competition is going from strength to strength, with registrations on track to exceed last year’s record 220 teams.
The secret? A fresh, fun approach that’s breaking from tradition and attracting players of all ages. From the introduction of the super shot, to relaxed uniform rules, music over the loudspeakers, and the option of using Netball NSW’s three-month registration, Baulkham Hills has created a competition that feels social, exciting, and accessible.
Kylie Tzavaras, President of Baulkham Hills Netball Association, said the changes were introduced to inject more fun and energy into the spring season.
“Spring had been a bit flat in the past, so we decided to really shake it up. We brought in the super shot, we added music, and we relaxed the uniforms. The vibe completely changed — players are smiling more, enjoying themselves, and the competition feels friendlier and more social.”
The super shot is played in the last four minutes of each quarter, with music signalling when the scoring zone comes into play. It’s been an instant hit with players and spectators alike.
“It’s amazing to watch — from our youngest players to the adults, everyone loves it. The music creates a real buzz, and it just adds to the fun atmosphere,” Ms Tzavaras said.
The spring comp also removes the pressure of traditional uniforms. Players simply need to wear the same colour bibs and similar-coloured shorts or shirts, making it easier for friends and social groups to form a team.
“It’s much less structured than our winter competition. Spring is all about friends, fun and being social — it’s a completely different vibe on the courts,” Ms Tzavaras said.
The competition’s accessibility is another drawcard. Teams can register directly without going through clubs, and new players can use Netball NSW’s three-month registration, making it a great introduction to the sport.
Building on this momentum, Baulkham Hills is planning to add two community nights this spring, complete with food trucks and a bar, following the success of their packed-out 50th anniversary celebrations.
With registrations already surpassing 140 teams and still open until October, the association is preparing for its biggest and most vibrant spring season yet.
