As the 2026 National Netball Championships kick off tomorrow, 9th April, in Melbourne, excitement is building around New South Wales’ 17/U and 19/U state teams as they prepare to compete against Australia’s most promising young athletes in a week of high-intensity, national-level competition.
After a stellar 2025 campaign, where the 19/U squad claimed gold and the 17/U side earned silver, expectations are high and momentum is on the side of both teams.
This year’s squads feature a blend of proven performers and emerging talent, reflecting the strength of New South Wales’ elite development pathways. The 19/U squad features five players from last year’s gold medal-winning team and four from the 17/U silver-medal squad, while across both teams, six standout athletes hail from regional areas including Illawarra, Orange, and Newcastle.
The 17/U team will be captained by Evalina Carneiro, a 16-year-old GIANTS Netball training partner. Carneiro’s leadership at such a young age, combined with her professional-level experience, adds an exciting dynamic to the squad and highlights the opportunities available through the state’s development pathways.
Among the 19/U squad is Skye Thompson, named as GIANTS Netball’s 11th player for the 2026 Suncorp Super Netball season. Identified nationally from a young age, Thompson brings valuable experience and leadership, reinforcing the squad’s depth and competitive strength.
General Manager of Performance and Pathways Mardi Aplin said the combination of experience and fresh talent makes this year’s teams particularly exciting.
“These teams are an absolute thrill to watch,” Aplin said.
“With returning champions from last year and exciting new talent stepping into these squads, the energy and potential are off the charts.
“It’s incredible to see athletes from across New South Wales, metropolitan and regional, come together and showcase their skills, and I can’t wait to see them light up the court in Melbourne.”
Preparation for the Championships has been intensive, with both squads focusing on combinations, consistency, and performing under pressure. Adaptability and depth will be crucial across a demanding multi-day schedule.
The Championships kick off on 9th April, with New South Wales’ 17/U side opening their campaign against Queensland at 5:40pm, followed by the 19/U team taking on South Australia at 7:45pm.
