A relative latecomer to the sport, Randwick’s Cheryl McCormack’s rise in netball was nevertheless meteoric once she set foot on a court.
One of the original inductees of the Netball Residence Program at the Australian Institute of Sport, McCormack would go on to represent NSW at a national level, as well as her country on the international stage.
She made her first NSW state team at 21/U level in 1979 and from there she didn’t look back.
From 1980 to 1987, McCormack became a stalwart of the NSW Opens team, catching the eye of Australian selectors in the process.
She made her debut for the Australian Diamonds in 1985 against Trinidad & Tobago and went on to represent her country nine times between then and 1986.
This was quite an achievement given Test matches weren’t as prevalent back then as they are today.
However, McCormack’s love of the sport wasn’t just confined to the playing arena. Since retiring from playing she has served as a director at both Netball NSW and Netball Australia. During this time McCormack pathed the way for former athletes playing a role in the administration of the sport.
She was superbly gifted athlete who possessed speed, elevation and an ability to cover all three defensive positions on a netball court.
She was inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame in 2022.
