The Hunter region has produced many fine netballers over the years but Lois Green* was one whose influence will never diminish, as their first Australian representative player.
A member of the Newcastle Netball Association, Lois along with her younger sister Nola (also a NNSW Hall of Fame inductee), started her netball career at St Aloysius Girls High School in Hamilton and it was here that her love of netball was fostered.
After making her debut for New South Wales in 1954 as a goal keeper and goal defence, Lois went on to become one of the state’s longest serving representatives.
Her impressive playing record includes ten national championships, as well as the Vice Captaincy in 1957 and Captaincy from 1961–1963.
In 1961 Lois became Newcastle’s first Australian representative player when she was selected in the Australian Squad.
Lois and her sister Nola also created history by being the only two sisters from New South Wales to be in the Australian Squad at the same time.
Lois received the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for her participation and support of netball for over 50 years.
She was inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame in 2009.
