A school teacher by profession, Margaret Morris' netball career started at Manly-Warringah and she went on to play for Sydney Teacher’s College and at Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). It was here at YWCA that her talent came to the fore and she was selected to represent New South Wales.
Making her NSW debut in 1946, Margaret went on to represent at eight National Championships and was appointed Vice-Captain in 1954, 1955 and 1958 and Captain in 1956 and 1957.
Her outstanding performances for NSW were rewarded with selected in the 1948 Australian Team to tour New Zealand. However, a teaching opportunity in the United Kingdom prompted Margaret’s withdrawal from the team.
Returning from the UK, Margaret picked up from where she left off, representing NSW at National Championships and gaining selection in the 1956 Australian Team.
In 1958, while still playing, Margaret obtained her National Umpire’s Badge. Her umpiring and administrative background saw her represent Australia at the first and second World Tournaments in England (1963) and Perth (1967). She was also the author of the first Umpire’s Guide Book for the All Australian Netball Association (AANA).
Margaret’s contribution to netball wasn’t just on the court, she was also an astute administrator holding Executive positions with Netball NSW for nearly 20 years and acting as a delegate to the AANA Council for four years.
She was inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame in 2009.
