A stalwart of the Orange Netball Association, Marianne Murphy’s achievements in the sport are many.
An AIS Scholarship holder in the 1980s, Murphy came on the radar of state selectors as a 15-year-old and before long she was representing NSW at 17U level, captaining the side in 1985.
She went on to captain the NSW 19U team a year later and was part of the NSW 21U teams between 1988 and 1989.
She was a constant in the NSW Opens sides from 1990-1994 and in 1988 she played in the Netball Youth World Cup.
A powerful midcourter her performances in the Esso and Mobil Leagues saw her called up for international duty with Australia and she became Diamond #111.
She made her debut against Trinidad & Tobago in 1994 and went on to win 13 caps for her country.
No doubt the highlight of her fine career was winning the 1995 Netball World Cup. This moment was as Murphy described: “the ultimate accolade and culmination of not only years of my hard work, but the combined work of netball in Australia”.
A legend of Orange and Central West netball, Murphy is still involved with her Association to this day and in 2019 she served as team manager for the NSW 19U State Team.
She was inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame in 2022
