In the lead up to First Nations Round Netball NSW Premier League Umpires revealed the story behind their current umpire uniforms.
The Premier League umpires are wearing an artwork that is being showcased in the Netball NSW Indigenous Emerging Pathway Programs as part of the Performance and Pathways Pillar.
The artwork, named the “The Game”, was a submission by Emily Lloyd. Emily is a young netballer from Wiradjuri Country who has grown up in a netball family.
“My family has had many fun experiences playing netball and the sport will always have a special place in my heart,” said Emily. “Playing netball not only provided me with opportunities to make new friends when we moved towns but also taught me the importance of team work and the positive impact Netball has on players physical and mental health."
Our umpires have been wearing and will continue to wear the specially designed shirts every Wednesday night at Netball Central during Netball NSW Premier League.
My Artwork Story – Emily Lloyd
My artwork named “The Game”, shows the court represented by the centred ball that connects the seven players in friendship and the fun of engaging in a competitive game of netball.
The depth of teamwork and skills are built within the colours of the court and shows that it takes an entire team, made up from all backgrounds with varying skills, to make a game.
The meeting circles at each end of the artwork show where players ultimately meet to get a goal and build upon their score.
My passion for netball has come from a multi-generational love of netball along with my own many years of training and playing games with friends I have met at the beginning of each new season. Each member of my family who has been a part of my Netball journey which include my Nan, Mother, Father, Aunty, Uncle, Sister and myself are shown in the traditional symbol for people, as players running across the court.
