After the biggest and best Origin Energy Premier League competition to date, we reached out to our 2022 Awards Winners to see what the past season has meant to them.
Here we chat to the recipient of the Neita Matthews OAM Umpire of the Year Award.
Neita Matthews OAM served Netball NSW in many capacities over decades but was a pioneer in the umpiring space. A Legend of the NNSW Hall of Fame, she also held Life Membership of the organisation. This Award is presented to an umpire who demonstrates a desire to strive for excellence on court, shows consistency in performance in competitions run by NNSW and continues to improve their knowledge of the game.
In 2022 the winner was Zoe Turner of Liverpool City.
Below she tells us what the Award means to her.
- What does this award mean to you?
I’m honoured to receive this award. It recognises the hard work and commitment I’ve put into progressing through the umpiring pathway. It also provides an opportunity to thank everyone who has supported and challenged me to umpire my best every game.
- Why do you enjoy what you do?
I enjoy umpiring because I like being a part of the game I love. I like the feeling of connection that umpiring brings – seeing my family and friends, being part of Team White, and letting everyone have fun playing, coaching and watching.
- What is your favourite memory in your time in Netball?
My favourite memory is attending my first State Champs as an umpire in Newcastle. I had just received my B Badge. The games were so competitive, and I received some awesome coaching over the three days. I loved the environment, and it made me want to keep striving to improve and develop my umpiring.
- How has Premier League aided your journey?
Through my umpiring journey, Premier League has provided a clear goal to achieve. I want to continue to develop and improve so that I get the opportunity to umpire such great games. Premier League challenges me to find consistency and pushes me to umpire at my best every week.
- What advice would you give to other umpires on the pathway?
Remember to stay present - focus on the game in front of you. Every game is an opportunity to learn, try new things and enjoy umpiring.
