Shooting Stars Netball Club, who are a part of Wagga Wagga Netball Association, have a goal to ensure all players feel comfortable and confident on the court. Since adopting the Netball NSW Inclusive Uniform Guidelines, the club received a lot of positive feedback from parents. A large portion of Shooting Stars Netball Club’s members have opted for purchasing the new and more inclusive uniforms, following from the introduction and implementation from the club.
The 2020 Participation Study and Review into netball, chaired by netball legend Liz Ellis, confirmed that uniforms are a significant factor around participation in the sport, and a big part of the decision as to why players choose to leave.
In line with the Netball NSW Guidelines, Shooting Stars Netball Club believe that the uniform options will improve inclusivity by providing appropriate uniforms for players of all ages, shapes, and sizes.
Following the implementation of inclusive uniforms, feedback from parents has been nothing but encouraging. Parents commented on the uniform options being more affordable, adaptable to the weather, inclusive for all individuals, and allows players to feel empowered by the freedom of choice. The club also noticed that there was an increase in sales on shirts and long-sleeved playing tops over dresses this year, following the introduction of inclusive uniforms.
Shooting Stars Netball Club worked alongside a local supplier to keep the design of the uniform in line with the Club’s dress design. Shirt styles and short options were created collaboratively in accordance with the Inclusive Uniform Guidelines.
Shooting Stars Netball Club is a leading force in Wagga Wagga Netball Association, receiving overwhelming support from other clubs within their association. Inspired by Shooting Stars Netball Club, some clubs are now wanting to offer their players inclusive uniform options for the second half of the season, and other clubs are now looking to incorporate the same ideas for 2023.
