Anthony Jarvis is a member of Charlestown Netball Association with 10 years of umpiring experience under his belt.
Netball NSW would like to congratulate Anthony following his selection from the HART Regional League to represent the Hunter region at the 2021 Regional State Cup.
We chatted with Anthony to discuss his journey…
Why do you love umpiring?
I enjoy the challenge of higher-level games, having the opportunity to help younger and less experienced players learn the rules, and coaching beginner umpires as they begin their careers.
Who has inspired you in your umpiring career and why?
No one person in particular. I consider myself very fortunate for the opportunities I’ve had to be coached by some fantastic people at events like Regional League and State Champs and very thankful for the time those people have given up to help me progress.
What is the best tip you have received about umpiring?
How the shooter is set up will tell you a lot about where the next pass is going and help your timing to the goal line.
What is the best tip you have for up-and-coming umpires?
Every game presents an opportunity to improve, so take every chance to work on a specific aspect of your umpiring that you need to work on. And above all enjoy yourself.
What is your favourite warm up song?
Depends on my mood at the time, it varies a lot.
What is a challenge/setback you have had to overcome in your umpiring journey?
Time management. There was a two-year period where club and other commitments took over and I didn’t have as many opportunities to umpire. Fortunately that’s changed now.
