Umpiring Spotlight - Chris Hall
Having umpired his 100th premier league game this season we recently sat down with Chris Hall from Inner West to talk about his umpiring journey.
How did you get into umpiring/tell us about your umpiring journey?
My sister played representative netball, so I was introduced to netball early on. After making some comments on the side line, one of the umpires offered me a rule book and challenged that if I thought I could do better, then to give it a go - which I did. I was 15 when I was awarded my C badge at Queensland State Championships in Rockhampton. I was awarded my B 2 years later. I was finally successful in achieving my A badge on my 6th attempt in 2000. I moved to Sydney in 2001 where I have been a part of the umpiring fraternity, where in 2022 was endorsed for the 4th time, making me feel very old at times.
Who has had the biggest influence on your umpiring?
I was lucky enough to have a group of A badges in Queensland who somehow managed to keep me grounded and on the right path. This group of umpires were friends on and off the court and showed me what it was to strive to be better, but also to give back to the next generation of umpires. Special mention must go to Eve Shepherd who worked tirelessly with me and challenged me to be better. Lesley Musch was my netball mum, we went to many Mens Nationals together and was and still is my fiercest supporter, so much so that on the night I was awarded my A badge, she certainly let everyone know.
What keeps you motivated to keep umpiring year after year?
Certainly not pre-season training! Being able to get on court and do something I love with a group of people that also love the game. Whilst each of us are on different pathways, it is special to be apart of a group with a similar goal. The friendships I have formed, not only in Sydney but across the country as a result of doing something I love is mind blowing.
Any memorable moments/highlights?
I have a couple. The night I was awarded my A badge, umpiring on Grand Final day at Anne Clark Centre where all divisions come together to celebrate the season and umpiring the 2018 Premier League Opens Grand Final.
Tell us about what your job encompasses at Netball NSW?
My role at Netball NSW has grown in the 7 years I have been with the organisation. In a nutshell, I now manage the accreditation pathway and educational opportunities for coaches, umpires and bench officials across the state. My role also includes managing the umpire and coach work force who deliver these education and development opportunities whether it is through a course or during an event or competition.
What keeps you busy away from work and netball?
There never seems to be enough time away from work (which is netball), but when I do, I have two energetic Cocker Spaniels to keep me on my toes.
