Netball NSW would like to express its deepest condolences to the family of netball pioneer Lynn Quinn OAM who has passed away.
A Netball NSW Life Member and Hall of Fame Inductee, Lynn’s contribution to the game across the state, as well as nationally and internationally, was immense.
A former director of Netball NSW, Lynn dedicated decades of time to the Sefton Netball Club and the Fairfield City Netball Association, simultaneously blazing her trail as an innovator in the field of bench officiating through enhancements in scoresheets and the gathering of statistics.
Today the Netball NSW Bench Official of the Year Award is presented in her honour.
Lynn’s skill and expertise was recognised not only by Netball Australia but also by the International Federation of Netball Associations (now World Netball).
She officiated at Commonwealth Games, Netball World Cups and was presented a Netball Australia Service Award in 2008 as well as an Australian Sports Medal in 2000.
In 2010 she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for her service to our game.
In addition to the above, Lynn played a key role in the development of umpire timing devices which are used in elite competition today.
A master of her trade, she was inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame in 2022 and remained a passionate supporter of the sport at all levels right until the very end, never missing a NSW Swifts game.
Netball was not her only community calling. Last year Lynn was honoured for 50 years of service to delivering Meals-On-Wheels to the most vulnerable residents of Canterbury-Bankstown.
Netball NSW Chair Sallianne Faulkner said the sport had lost one of its greatest servants.
“Lynn’s passion for netball and commitment to its growth was unrivalled and on behalf of Netball NSW I extend our sympathies to her family” she said.
“Lynn had many friends in our game and her passion for developing bench officials, who now perform on the national and international stage, is something we should never take for granted.
“At heart Lynn was a mentor who volunteered years of her time to ensure netball would become a pillar of the community she lived in.
“But her reach went far beyond that. She broke the mould and made netball officialdom more efficient and modern.
“Without people like Lynn netball would not be the No.1 sport for women and young girls in Australia. For that we will be eternally grateful.”
