This September, the NSW netball community of players, umpires, coaches, support crews and fans will unite as Team Crazy for Crazy Hair & Sock Day to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Netball Associations can register their day here.
In its tenth year, Crazy Hair & Sock Day, is a fundraiser that encourages the netball community in every corner of New South Wales to go Team Crazy, dress up with fun hair and silly socks and make a cash donation to The Kids’ Cancer Project.
For the past decade, Crazy Hair & Sock Day has been an important fundraising event for The Kids’ Cancer Project, raising vital funds for life-saving research to help children diagnosed with cancer.
Our generous netball community has raised more than $300,000 to date which has gone toward finding cures for many types of childhood cancer. And we’re not giving up now!
The Kids’ Cancer Project is an independent national charity supporting childhood cancer research. Since 1993, the charity has committed tens of millions of dollars to innovative research projects to find better treatments and ultimately cures for children’s cancers.
Owen Finegan, Australian Wallaby legend and now CEO of The Kids’ Cancer Project is delighted by the commitment of the NSW netball community to the cause.
“COVID-19 may have stalled the netball season’s start, but it certainly didn’t put a stop to children being diagnosed with cancer,” he said. “That’s why this year we’re even more grateful for our enduring partnership with Netball NSW.
“Many people aren’t aware that the causes of childhood cancer are unknown, that there is no prevention and that scientific research is the only way we can improve treatments and ultimately survival for the 950 Australian kids diagnosed every year,” he said.
Netball NSW Executive General Manager of Community and Pathways Darren Simpson said the organisation was delighted to see the fundraising initiative back.
“The Kids’ Cancer Project do amazing work to help families who are doing it tough, not just in the COVID-19 pandemic, but year round. Their association with Netball NSW and the NSW Swifts has been a mainstay of the game over the past 10 years and their fundraising initiative is very popular at clubs all over the state.
“Crazy Hair & Sock Day is a fun, safe and colourful way to for the netball community to help fight a disease that unfortunately affects too many and I encourage all of our clubs and Associations to take part.”
