Netball NSW’s next generation of leaders came together for an inspiring and action-packed weekend at Sydney Olympic Park, showcasing the power of youth voice in shaping the future of the sport.
Bringing together members of the Youth Advisory Group (YAG), the weekend provided a platform for collaboration, leadership development, and meaningful engagement with key stakeholders, including the NSW Office of Sport and executives and stakeholders within Netball NSW.
The weekend began at Netball Central, where YAG members gathered before attending a collaborative session with the Office of Sport and meeting with their Teenage Advisory Committee members. YAG representatives Molly Allan and Elliana Henderson presented the group’s work and vision, reinforcing the importance of youth-led perspectives in shaping more inclusive, accessible, and forward-thinking netball experiences across New South Wales.
The session continued with interactive discussions and working groups, where participants explored key focus areas including strengthening the connection between elite sport and grassroots participation, creating clearer career pathways for all in sport, and identifying opportunities to drive long-term community impact. These discussions highlighted the value of collaboration between sport and government, as well as the influence young people can have in shaping the future of netball.
Later in the day, YAG members played an important role in the Netball NSW Annual General Meeting. Alyssa Pinchbeck delivered the Acknowledgement of Country, before Sofia Novak, Alyssa Pinchbeck, and Saachi Singh joined CEO Tracey Scott in a Q&A about youth involvement in administration in the game. Their contribution demonstrated the growing leadership and professionalism of young people within the organisation and was very well received by both board members and attendees.
In the afternoon, YAG members took part in a marketing and communications session led by Netball NSW staff, gaining practical insights into digital storytelling and building an authentic voice in sport.
The day concluded with a group dinner in Parramatta, followed by a team-building activity at Scram Escape Rooms, giving participants the opportunity to strengthen connections in a relaxed and engaging environment.
On Sunday, YAG members returned to Netball Central to continue their project work and presentations before participating in an “Empower Play” brainstorming session. This activity encouraged innovative thinking around future initiatives designed to grow participation and enhance the overall netball experience.
The weekend wrapped up with a trip to Qudos Bank Arena for a Suncorp Super Netball double header, where participants watched GIANTS Netball take on the Melbourne Vixens, followed by the NSW Swifts facing the Melbourne Mavericks. Experiencing elite netball firsthand reinforced the importance of strong pathways and the connection between community and high-performance levels of the game.
Netball NSW General Manager of Growth and Innovation, Jenny Moroney, reflected on the weekend’s success, highlighting the impact of giving young people a meaningful role in shaping the sport:
“This weekend was a great example of what can be achieved when young people are given a genuine voice.
“Seeing our YAG members engage with key stakeholders, present with confidence, and contribute meaningful ideas reinforces the strength of our netball community, not just for athletes, but for future leaders in sport.”
The Youth Advisory Group weekend showcased the passion, insight, and capability of netball’s emerging leaders. By creating opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully, connect with decision-makers, and develop their skills, Netball NSW continues to build a strong and inclusive future for the sport.
