A sold-out NSW Derby, a national championship for the QBE Swifts Academy and recognition for several NSW officials combined to deliver a memorable weekend that showcased the strength of netball across New South Wales.
More than 10,000 fans packed Ken Rosewall Arena on Sunday afternoon as the NSW Swifts and GIANTS met in the final NSW Derby of the 2026 Suncorp Super Netball season.
In front of a capacity crowd, the two clubs produced one of the most thrilling contests of the year, with the result remaining in doubt until the final seconds.
For the GIANTS, the one-goal victory was an emotional way to finish the season. After several narrow losses throughout the year, they finally broke through to record their first win of 2026, reclaiming the Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy and giving departing stars Jane Watson and Whitney Souness a fitting finale.
For the Swifts, despite missing several key players through injury, the performance reflected the resilience and fighting spirit that has defined the club throughout the season. The contest itself was a fitting advertisement for elite netball in NSW, with both teams contributing to a spectacle that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The atmosphere generated by a sold-out crowd highlighted the continued growth and popularity of netball in New South Wales and the passion of supporters across both clubs.
While attention was focused on the Derby, the next generation of NSW talent was making its mark nearby at Netball Central during the 2026 Super Netball Reserves Finals.
The QBE Swifts Academy claimed the national title with a commanding 69-55 victory over the Sunshine Coast Lightning Bolts, capping off an outstanding Finals campaign. Despite facing significant injury challenges throughout the season, the Academy squad remained united and delivered when it mattered most, showcasing the strength of the NSW pathway system.
The competition also provided valuable experience for a youthful GIANTS Academy side, which competed strongly throughout the season. Featuring a number of emerging athletes, the squad consistently challenged more experienced opponents and demonstrated the depth of talent being developed across NSW.
Together, the performances of both NSW programs highlighted the bright future of netball in the state and the important role academy pathways continue to play in preparing athletes for opportunities at the elite level.
NSW's contribution to the weekend extended beyond the playing arena, with several officials recognised through appointments at the Super Netball Reserves Finals Series.
Sarah McNamara (Liverpool) earned selection for the Gold Medal Match after officiating throughout the Finals weekend, while Alex Brown (Newcastle) was appointed to the Bronze Medal Match and Finals Series. Adele Kozak (Inner West) was also selected to officiate throughout the Finals campaign.
Earlier in the week, Clarissa Burgess (Baulkham Hills), Rachel Pope (Camden) and Ryan Ahearne (Randwick) were all appointed to matches during the Play-In Tournament, highlighting the depth of umpiring talent being developed across the state.
The appointments reflect the quality of the Netball NSW officiating pathway and the important role NSW umpires continue to play on the national stage.
