Understanding who our members are, why they participate and why they stay engaged in netball is central to growing a stronger netball community. In 2019 Netball NSW begun a partnership with the SPort & Recreation INTervention & Epidemiology Research (SPRINTER) group at the University of Sydney. SPRINTER provides leadership and evidence to inform evidence-based decision making.
Through our partnership with SPRINTER, Netball NSW gains evidence-based insights utilising membership information collected at the time of registration and through in-depth analysis of responses to our annual online membership survey.
In November Netball NSW participants will again receive in their inboxes the annual membership survey. In its third year, the data from this survey becomes richer and enables the Board and Management to make better data driven decisions to strategically grow participation of netball in NSW.
In 2020 7,866 Netball NSW members responded to the survey, with the key insights being
- Both children and adults indicated fun & enjoyment and to be part of a team as the top reasons why they play netball
- 62% of children and 76% of adults who responded reported that netball was the sport they most strongly associated themselves with
- 75% of registered players in 2020 had participated in netball in either 2018 or 2019, and 55% of registered players had played in both years. Highest retention rate was the Riverina Region (78.7%)
- The most common age to start playing netball is 8 years old. 40% of new players were in the NetSetGO age group (5-10 years)
- Children who used an Active Kids Voucher had 3 times greater odds of returning to play netball compared to those who did not use an Active Kids Voucher.
- Kids reported playing netball improved their skills, coordination and ability to work in a team.
- While adults indicated playing netball improved their social connections, strength, fitness and overall health.

The 2021 survey will begin to explore the experiences of our officials and administrators in our netball community.
Netball NSW encourages more players, officials and administrators to complete the survey this year and contribute towards making netball is NSW’s leading sport of choice and opportunity. The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete, depending on how involved you are in the sport. By completing the survey, you will enable more informed decisions to be made to grow the game of netball in NSW.
