NSW Pathway graduate and GIANTS fan-favourite, Tilly McDonell, has announced her retirement from elite netball, with this weekend's huge double-header bringing to a close an inspiring netball journey.
McDonell first joined the GIANTS in 2019 as a teenager, arriving at the club while still representing New South Wales at the National Underage Championships and balancing her introduction to the elite environment with the final stages of her junior representative career.
From the moment she stepped into the program, her love for the game, tireless work ethic and infectious energy made her a valued member of the team and a favourite among supporters.
Across her eight seasons with the club, McDonell became known as a tenacious and dependable defender, growing from a young talent into a player capable of anchoring the GIANTS’ defensive end with her strong game awareness and ability to read the play. Powerful in the air and relentless in her work rate, she built a reputation for hunting the high ball and bringing intensity to every contest.
Off the court, McDonell was equally admired for the heart she brought to the club and the pride she took in representing the GIANTS colours. A consistent and dedicated presence within the program, she earned the admiration of teammates, staff and fans alike for the commitment and positivity she brought to the environment.
McDonell signed with the club this year as a Temporary Replacement Player for the injured Jodi-Ann Ward and, with that contract now coming to an end, the 25-year-old is ready to turn her attention to life beyond elite netball and begin her career in law.
“I’ve been so lucky to spend the past eight seasons with this club and alongside such amazing teammates, coaches and staff. The GIANTS has truly felt like a second home for me,” McDonell said when reflecting on her career.
“Netball has given me so many lifelong friendships and experiences that I’ll always cherish. I’m really proud to have worn the GIANTS dress and represented this club.
“As I step away from elite netball, I’m really excited to start the next chapter. I’m ready to be admitted as a solicitor soon and I’m looking forward to stepping into that world and beginning my legal career.
“I’ll always be incredibly grateful for everything netball and this club have given me.”
GIANTS Head Coach Nerida Stewart paid tribute to McDonell’s contribution to the club.
“Tilly has been an incredibly important part of our club for a long time,” Stewart said.
“Her positivity, professionalism and the way she connects with teammates have made her a valued member of our environment, but her impact has extended far beyond the court. She’s built a genuine connection with our members and fans and has always embraced her role in the community, representing the GIANTS with pride and authenticity.
“We’re incredibly proud of what she’s achieved in netball, but equally excited to see what she’ll do next as she moves into her legal career. She’ll always be part of the GIANTS family.”
Tilly will play her last game this Sunday when the GIANTS host the Vixens at Qudos Bank Arena.
