The 2025 Koori Netball Tournament brought together more than 5,000 players, families and supporters from across New South Wales for a weekend of competition, culture and connection at Charlestown, in the City of Lake Macquarie.
Delivered in partnership by Charlestown Netball Association, the Office of Sport and Netball NSW, the annual tournament is a highlight on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sporting calendar, celebrating the power of sport to unite communities, promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen cultural pride.
In a showcase of skill and spirit, Di-Dis Ladies A claimed victory in the Women’s Division 1 competition, while Minii Yanan were crowned champions in the Mixed Division 1 category.
Event organiser Dianne Pascoe said the tournament continues to be a special celebration of both netball and community.
“The Koori Netball Tournament is more than just a sporting event – it’s about connection, identity and pride,” Ms Pascoe said.
“Seeing generations come together on and off the court reminds us of the strength of our communities and the importance of creating spaces where our culture is recognised and celebrated.”
Player Khalia Saunders, who represented the Di-Dis, said the experience was one she will never forget.
“There’s nothing like the atmosphere at the Koori Netball Tournament,” Saunders said.
“When we take the court we aren’t just playing for the win, we play for our families, our mob and for those who have come and gone before us!
“It’s deadly to see everyone out here representing their mob, playing hard, and showing so much love and respect for each other. You can feel the pride in every game.”
The event featured divisions for women, men and mixed teams, as well as junior competitions and cultural activities celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.
This year’s tournament also recognised the NSW Waradas, finalists for Team of the Year at The Female Athlete Project Awards, and encouraged attendees to show their support by voting online.
The Koori Netball Tournament continues to grow each year, providing opportunities for players of all ages to compete, connect and celebrate community through sport.
